My first supermarket visit in six months

Hi Reader,

A few weeks ago I went into a supermarket for the first time in a long time.

I went in to film some content for a shopping series I've been running on social media, and honestly, I wasn't expecting much beyond a bit of background footage. But I hadn't actually walked the aisles in well over six months, and what I found when I did genuinely stopped me in my tracks.

Even in the fresh fruit and vegetable section, the amount of processed food that has crept in was startling. Health claims on products that had no real business making them. Packaging designed to look wholesome wrapped around ingredients that weren't. And that was before I'd even made it to the middle aisles.

I shop differently now to how I shopped even a few years ago. A small, consistent list of pantry staples from the supermarket, mostly done via click and collect so I'm not wandering the aisles. A farmers market for fresh produce. A local butcher I trust. A seafood delivery subscription. A few other local suppliers I've built relationships with over time. It feels effortless now, genuinely, in a way that shopping never used to feel.

But walking back into that environment after such a long break made something very clear to me. The further I've moved away from relying on packaged supermarket food, the better my family's health has become. We rarely get sick, and I have no doubt that's why.

I used to shop to avoid additives. Checking labels, choosing the cleaner versions, feeling like I was doing the right thing. What I eventually realised is that avoiding the bad stuff and actually eating well are not quite the same thing. The shift that made the real difference wasn't what I stopped buying. It was what I started cooking.

I've pulled everything from the How I Shop social series into a free guide, every category covered, what I look for, what I avoid and why, plus a complete capsule pantry list that covers the majority of the Well Nourished recipes. If you've been following along and want one simple reference to take to the shops, this is it.

RECIPES | WELLNESS HUB | HEALTHY KIDS | SHOP Hi Reader, There is no quick fix for how you're feeling right now. Not the elimination diet, not the gut protocol, not the liver cleanse, not the supplement stack that promises complete resolution in a week. I know that's not what you want to hear. But after nearly 30 years as a Naturopath, I'd be doing you a disservice if I pretended otherwise. The wellness industry is very good at making complexity feel solvable in one purchase. Pick a protocol,...

RECIPES | WELLNESS HUB | HEALTHY KIDS | SHOP Hi Reader, Last week I told you about my mum , and the "good genes" assumption that almost everyone makes when they see her. A lot of you wrote back. Thank you, it clearly struck a chord. But I want to tell you the thing that actually impresses me most about her. Because every time I share her photo, the comments focus on how she looks. And yes, she looks wonderful. But that's not what impresses me most! It's that she jumped on the back of my son's...
